| US statesman, born in Sampson Co, North Carolina, USA. He studied at the University of North Carolina, and became a lawyer. A member of the state legislature for three years, he entered Congress in 1810, was senator for Alabama (1820–44), minister to France (1844–6), senator again (1846–53), and just before his death was elected Democratic vice-president of the USA. |
