| Australian military leader, born in Kirkee, E India, where his father was an official of the government of Bombay. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and in 1914 was put in command of the Australian and New Zealand contingents then arriving in Egypt for the Dardanelles offensive. He planned the landing at Gallipoli and, upon evacuation from the Peninsula, took his troops to the Western Front. After the war he returned to India to command the Northern Army, becoming commander-in-chief in 1925. |
