| US senator and representative, born in Orwell, Vermont, USA. A Union veteran, he was elected to the US Senate (Republican, Louisiana, 1868–72, 1877–83). As one of the so-called carpetbaggers, he won a disputed election to become governor of Louisiana (1873–7) that nearly led to civil war in the state. He also served in the US House of Representatives (1883–5). |
