He studied at University College London, became lecturer at Swansea (1926–39), professor of history at Exeter (1939–53), and Stevenson professor of international history at the London School of Economics (1953–67). He was known especially for his studies of the Bismarck period in international relations, and of British diplomacy in the 20th-c. |
