| Writer, born in London, UK; in his youth he studied and travelled in Europe. His first collection of stories, Fireman Flower and Other Stories, appeared in 1944. His many novels include the much acclaimed The Body (1949). His fiction is often macabre, sometimes funny, and marked by a sharp eye for the details of place and human relationships. In addition to many collections of stories, he also wrote travel books, children's stories, essays, and songs. He was a friend of the writer Henry Green, serving with him in the London Fire Service during World War 2. |
