| Oceanographer, born in Vinton, Iowa, USA. He studied at Iowa and Columbia universities. In 1952 he became the first to show the existence and importance of ocean turbidity currents, using the records of failure of the many Atlantic communications cables during the 1929 earthquake. In 1957, with William Ewing, he went on to demonstrate that mid-ocean ridges have a central rift. |
