| biography:
| Politician, born in Dundee, E Scotland, UK. He emigrated to Canada in 1820, established the Colonial Advocate in 1824, and entered politics in 1828. In 1837 he published in his paper a declaration of Canadian independence, headed a band of reform-minded insurgents, and after a skirmish with a superior force, fled to the USA, where he was imprisoned. He returned to Canada in 1849, becoming a journalist and MP (1850–8). |
