| Count of Nassau-Dillenburg, born in Siegen, WC Germany, stadtholder and governor of Friesland (from 1584), stadtholder of Groningen (from 1595) and of Drenthe (from 1596), the eldest son of Jan VI (the Elder) of Nassau. He served as a cavalry officer under William of Orange against the Spaniards. With his cousin Maurice he created the army of the rebel states. He supported the Counter-Remonstrants, but was in favour of a moderate policy towards Oldenbarnevelt. |
