| biography:
| Labour leader, born in Saginaw Co, Michigan, USA. A carpenter, he became president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (1915–52). Active within the American Federation of Labor (AFL), he was such a conservative that he opposed President Roosevelt's New Deal, and as a staunch proponent of craft unions, he fell out with his fellow AFL leaders over attempts to get together with the Congress of Industrial Organizations. |
