biography: Mathematician, born in Exeter, Devon, SW England, UK. He entered King's College London, at the age of 15, and then Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1863. In 1871 he became professor of applied mathematics at University College London. He wrote on projective and non-Euclidean geometry, and on the philosophy of science, and is especially known for his development of the theory of biquaternions.
