| Palaeontologist and ichthyologist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Columbia University (AB, AM, PhD), and assisted Henry Fairfield Osborn (1899–1913) before joining the staff of the American Museum of Natural History (1911–44), where he became curator of ichthyology and comparative anatomy. He specialized in anatomy and the development of teeth in fish and mammals, and among his many publications are The Orders of Mammals (1910) and The Origin and Evolution of Human Dentition (1920–2). |
