| British politician. He came to notice at an early age, when at 16 he received a standing ovation after addressing the 1977 Tory Party Conference. He studied at Oxford, where he became president of the Union, joined a firm of management consultants, and was elected an MP in 1989. He acted as parliamentary private secretary to Chancellor of the Exchequer Norman Lamont (1990–3), then became under-secretary (1993–4) and minister of state for social security (1994–5), and minister for Wales (1995–7). He won the leadership of the Conservative Party following John Major's resignation in 1997. He resigned as leader after the general election defeat of 2001. |
