| Chemical engineer, born in Ada, Ohio, USA. During World War 1 he conducted research on mustard gas for the US government. In 1919 he became director of organic chemical research at Dow Chemical, and made contributions to the production of phenol, indigo, chloracetic acid, and phenyl alcohol. |
