| Realist painter, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. On his return to Philadelphia he taught at the Women's School of Design (1891–6), and became an ardent advocate of Realism in art, beginning a movement which, in the first decade of the 20th-c, came to be known as the Ashcan school. In 1898 he began teaching at the New York School of Art, in 1908 established his own influential art school in New York City, and formed the group known as ‘The Eight’. |
