| biography:
| Plant breeder, born in Docker, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied medicine at Cambridge, but tuberculosis forced him to give up and emigrate to Australia in 1870. He found work as a surveyor, but in 1886 he settled on his own property near Tharwa, New South Wales, where an early interest in grasses led him to systematic experiments with different strains of wheat. He pioneered scientific wheat-breeding, and his work was almost solely responsible for the growth and success of the Australian wheat industry. |
