| biography:
| Count of Holland (from 1304), and Count of Hainault (as William I), born in Valenciennes, N France, the son of John II (Avesnes) and Philippina of Luxemburg. He married Joanna, the daughter of Count Charles I of Valois, whose brother was the future King Philip IV of France. He was very active and influential politically, and married his daughters well. He was instrumental in replacing Edward II of England by Edward III, to whom he married his third daughter Philippa of Hainault. He gradually managed to separate Brabant from France, and when the Hundred Years' War started he supported England, bringing with him Holland, Hainault, Flanders, and Brabant. |
