| English statesman, born in Worcester, Hereford and Worcester, WC England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and became a lawyer (1676) and a Whig MP (1689). He helped to draft the Declaration of Rights (1689), and after the Revolution of 1688 held several posts under William III, culminating as Lord Chancellor (1697). William's most trusted minister, he was the object of frequent attacks, which led to his impeachment (and acquittal) in 1701. He was president of the Privy Council under Anne (1708–14). |
