| Dutch general, born in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He accompanied William III to England in 1688, and fought at the Battle of the Boyne (1690). As commander-in-chief in Ireland, he defeated the remaining rebels, and was created Earl of Athlone (1692). He later led the Dutch troops under Marlborough. |
