| Duke of Normandy, the eldest son of William I, the Conqueror. On William's death (1087) Robert succeeded only to Normandy, while England passed to the second son, William Rufus. A protracted struggle between the two brothers was interrupted by Robert's participation in the First Crusade (1096–1101), and in his absence the throne of England was seized by his younger brother Henry I on the death of Rufus. In 1101 Robert invaded England, but was forced to recognize Henry. In 1106 Henry invaded Normandy, and Robert was captured at the Battle of Tinchebray. He spent the rest of his life a prisoner. |
