| biography:
| Educator, born near Claysville, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Washington and Jefferson College (1926) and became professor of languages at Miami University. His later posts include professor of philosophy at Woodward College, Cincinnati (1843–5) and professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia (1845–73). He compiled the famous McGuffey Readers, six elementary schoolbooks (1836–57) that sold 122 million copies and became standard texts for generations of 19th-c US children. |
