| Poet, born in Newport, SE Wales, UK. Emigrating to the USA in 1893, he lived as a tramp and casual workman until the loss of a leg while ‘jumping’ a train caused him to return to England, where he began to write. He lived a wandering life to raise enough money to have his poems printed (1905). Once known, he wrote several books of poetry, essays, and a well-known prose work, The Autobiography of a Super-tramp (1908). |
