| biography:
| Army officer and explorer, born in Queen Anne's Co, Maryland, USA. He trained at West Point and joined the team of Topographical Engineers who helped survey the US–Canada (1844–6) and the US–Mexico (1848–57) boundaries. He commanded the Indian Territory (1861), held western commands during the Civil War, and retired as a brigadier general (1876). |
