| biography:
| Artist, cartoonist, and book-illustrator, born in London, UK. He trained at the Islington School of Art, and in 1897 illustrated an edition of Don Quixote, the first of many works, including editions of The Arabian Nights (1899), Twelfth Night (1908) and Water Babies (1915). His fame rests mainly on his humorous drawings - in his ability to poke fun at the machine age with intricate drawings of countless ‘Heath Robinson contraptions’ of absurd and fantastic design to perform simple and practical operations, such as the raising of one's hat, the shuffling and dealing of cards, or the recovering of a collar-stud which has slipped down the wearer's back. |
