| biography:
| Naturalist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He studied natural sciences with Louis Agassiz. He led the Western Union Telegraph Expedition to Alaska (1865–8) and joined the US Coast Survey of Alaska (1871–84) and the US Geological Survey (1884–1923). He wrote Alaska and its Resources (1870) and the Pacific Coast Pilot (2 vols, 1879–83), and published extensively on molluscs. Dall's sheep, a bighorn sheep found in NW North America, is named after him. |
