| Politician and film censor, born in Sullivan, Indiana, USA. A lawyer by training, he was Republican national chairman (1918–20), and engineered Warren G Harding's presidential campaign. He became US postmaster general (1921–2), then served as the first president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (1922–45). In 1930 he formulated the Production Code, known as the Hays Code, which enforced a rigorous code of morality on American films, and which was not superseded until 1966. |
