| Chemical engineer, born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He organized and directed the department of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1905), conducted research on cellulose, and co-invented a method of manufacturing artificial silk (1905). During World War 1 he was instrumental in setting up the chemical warfare programme. |
