| Labour leader, born in Armagh, Pennsylvania, USA. An iron moulder, he joined a local moulder's union in Philadelphia in 1857. In 1860 he helped organize the Iron Molder's International Union (IMIU), served as its president (1863–9), and also founded the National Labor Union (1866), and was its president also (1868–9). Although he looked to the English co-operative labour movement and was opposed to strikes, he took an active role in fighting for labour's rights. |
