biography: Clergyman, writer, and artist, born in Carlisle, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and in 1777 became vicar of Boldre in Hampshire. A leader of the 18th-c cult of the picturesque, he was the author of works on the scenery of Britain, illustrated by his own aquatint engravings. He is satirized by Combe in Dr Syntax. His brother Sawrey (1733–1807) was a highly successful animal painter, especially of horses.
