| Artist and archaeologist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied philosophy and aesthetics at Oxford, then trained as an artist in London under Alphonse Legros. He moved to Coniston in the Lake District to be private secretary and collaborator to John Ruskin, and was for a time a professor at Reading University. He is best known for his archaeological studies on Viking remains. |
