| biography:
| Historian, born in Exeter, SW England, UK. He studied at Exeter, taught economics at Leicester (1931–41, 1946–48), served on the price regulating committee (1941–5), and joined the history department at Leicester (1948), becoming professor in 1965. He is best known for his book The Making of the English Landscape (1955), and for his BBC television series, Landscapes of England (1976–8). He was the first to explain the historical evolution of the landscape, and created a new interest in local history. |
