| biography:
| Naval architect, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Harvard and Columbia, where he graduated in law, but soon changed to naval architecture, where his designs placed great emphasis on safety in the event of collision. In partnership with his brother Frederick he designed and built yachts, luxury liners, and (from 1933) US naval vessels and the ‘Liberty Ships’ of World War 2. His most famous design was the 53 330 ton United States, which regained the Blue Riband of the North Atlantic for the USA in 1952. |
