| biography:
| Dancer, choreographer, and artistic director, born in New York City, USA. He trained at the Joffrey Ballet School, and became resident choreographer of the Stuttgart Ballet (1976), and artistic director of Frankfurt Ballet (1984). His controversial, rule-bending works, including Say Bye Bye (1980) and Impressing the Czar (1988), frequently use spoken text and stage mechanics to enhance the steps. He is known for his challenge to, and remodelling of, the ballet vocabulary for contemporary purposes, making explicit the power and athleticism of the modern dancer. |
