| biography:
| US governor and lawyer, born in Grenada, Missouri, USA. A lawyer, he served in the Mississippi house of representatives (Democrat, 1948–56), becoming state treasurer in 1964 and lieutenant governor (1972–6). As governor (1980–4), he tried to improve Mississippi's image, inviting intellectuals to the governor's mansion, courting high technology industry, and mandating compulsory school attendance. He later returned to his law firm, Ludlum, Winter, & Stennis. |
