| Publisher and US senator, born in Alameda Co, California, USA. A conservative newspaper publisher, he was initially appointed and then elected to the US Senate (Republican, CA, 1945–59). He served as majority leader (1953–5) and minority leader (1955–9), and ran unsuccessfully for governor of California in 1958. He committed suicide. |
