| New Zealand statesman and prime minister (1912–25), born in Limavady, Co Londonderry, NW Northern Ireland, UK. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1870 and became a farmer, taking the leadership of farming associations. Elected to the House of Representatives (1894) as a Conservative, he became Leader of the Opposition (1894–1912), and then prime minister. He held this office until his death, leading the coalition during World War 1. |
