| British statesman, born in Dane End, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK, the youngest son of W E Gladstone. He was Liberal MP for Leeds (1880–1910), became Liberal chief whip in 1899, and home secretary (1905–10). He was appointed first Governor-General of the Union of South Africa (1910–14) and raised to the peerage in 1910. He was head of the War Refugees Association (1914–19), and published his political reminiscences, After Thirty Years, in 1928. |
