| Portrait painter, born in Bristol, SW England, UK. The son of an innkeeper, as a child he was famed for his pencil portraits, and by the age of 12 he had his own studio in Bath. His full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte, which he painted at the age of 20, is one of his best works. In 1792 he was patronized by George III, knighted in 1815, and in 1820 succeeded Benjamin West as president of the Royal Academy. |
