| Explorer, born in Bristol, SW England, UK. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, London, emigrated to Australia in 1850, and worked in the Victoria goldfields. Sponsored by Sir Ferdinand Müller, he began to search the outback for good grazing land, discovering L Amadeus (1872) and the Gibson Desert (1874), named after a companion who died there. His journey from Port Augusta to Perth and back (1875–6) is described in his Australia Twice Traversed (1889). |
