| Engineer and inventor, born in Taunton, Somerset, SW England, UK. He invented an explosive rifle bullet which was outlawed by the St Petersburg Convention of 1869. He then worked on the design of a breech-loading rifle (1871), which was adapted by the American James Lee as the Lee-Metford rifle, and adopted by the British War Office in 1888. |
