| Revolutionary statesman, born in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. He was admitted to the bar (1770), served Rhode Island as a delegate to the Continental Congress (1776–81, 1783–5), and was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence (1776). From 1790–1820 he was collector of the port of Newport. |
