| Historian and diplomat, born near Clayton, North Carolina, USA. He studied in the USA and in Germany before teaching history at Randolph-Macon College (1900–8) and the University of Chicago (1908–33). He wrote extensively about the antebellum South, the Civil War, and Woodrow Wilson. He was ambassador to Germany (1933–7). |
