| biography:
| Poet and humorist, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh University, and was called to the Scottish bar in 1840. In 1836 he began a lifelong connection with Blackwood's Magazine, to which he contributed parodies and burlesque reviews. In 1845 he was appointed professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at Edinburgh. His works include the Bon Gaultier Ballads (1845), and Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers (1848). |
