| biography:
| Writer, author of the ‘Biggles’ stories, born in Hertford, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. He trained as a surveyor before serving in the Norfolk Yeomanry (1914). He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and was shot down and imprisoned; he then escaped, but was recaptured. He retired from the Royal Air Force in 1930, and edited Popular Flying, where he first wrote his stories featuring Captain James Bigglesworth (‘Biggles’). He went on to write over 70 novels, many of which are still in print. |
