| Planter and scientist, born near Elgin, Moray, NE Scotland, UK. He moved to West Florida in 1773, and built a plantation near Natchez, MI. A correspondent of Thomas Jefferson, and the first surveyor-general of his area, he undertook explorations of the Quachita and Red R areas in present-day Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana (1804–5). |
