| Instrument-maker and astronomer, born in Portland, Maine, USA. The first director of the Harvard College Observatory (1839–59), he equipped it from his Dorchester-parlour observatory. A donation provided for a 15-inch telescope, for which he designed the dome and chair. A pioneer in celestial photography, he discovered the seventh satellite of Saturn with his son George Bond. |
