| Pioneer Australian road builder, born in Wimbourne Minster, Dorset, S England, UK. He arrived in Australia in 1800 as a lieutenant in the New South Wales Corps, and purchased land which he farmed. In 1814 Governor Lachlan Macquarie made him superintendent of works for a new road over the Blue Mountains, which he completed in just six months. He then returned to farming, and established a flock of sheep famous for the quality of its wool. |
