| biography:
| Soldier and colonial administrator, born on the I of Ulva, Argyll and Bute, W Scotland, UK. He joined the Black Watch in 1777, and after service in North America, India, and Egypt, was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 1810 following the deposition of Bligh. The colony, populated largely by convicts, and exploited by monopolists, was raised by his administration to a state of prosperity. In 1821, political chicanery by the monopolists and his own ill health compelled him to return to Britain. Known as ‘the father of Australia’ he has given his name to the Lachlan and Macquarie rivers, and to Macquarie I. |
