| Poet, born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. He studied at Westminster School, and was called to the bar in 1754. He suffered frequently from mental instability, and attempted suicide several times. While living in Olney, he collaborated with the clergyman John Newton to write the Olney Hymns (1779). His ballad of John Gilpin (1783) was highly successful, as was his long poem about rural ease, The Task (1785). |
