| Nonconformist, born in Burslem, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He became a potter, and in the course of a dissolute youth achieved an ephemeral reputation as a champion dancer. In 1805 he was converted to Methodism, becoming a co-founder with Hugh Bourne of the Primitive Methodists (1810). |
