| Founder of the Primitive Methodists, born in Fordhays, Staffordshire, C England, UK. His zeal as a Wesleyan preacher for large open-air meetings received no approval from the leaders of the denomination, and in 1808 he was cut off from the Wesleyan connection. He gathered round him many devoted followers, and formed a new group, adopting the title of Primitive Methodists in 1810; colloquially, they were sometimes also called Ranters. |
